Songkran- Festival Some say that the nationwide Songkran Festival, from13th to15th is just another wonderful way of demonstrating how fun-loving Thai people are. Songkran is actually the traditional Thai new Year and has its foundations in a water blessing ceremony designed to show respect to the older generation. That this water drenched festival falls at the end of the dry season in Thailand when rain is scarcer than a palm tree in Antarctica, is another insight into the wonderful world of Thai insouciance. The bottom line is this: You're going to get soaked to the skin, so dress (or undress) accordingly. In some cases, locals will insist on mixing, talcum powder or even dye into the water they throw at passers-by,so its wiser not to wear your Sunday best or your brand new Adidas/NIke shoes during, these days. And don't get mad if someone soaks you get even. Water guns and pistols are available almost everywhere and if you want to carry the reveling on into the evening you should stock up and take a few bottles of ice-cold "ammunition" with you There are some dangers involved, though. Do not ride a motocycle at high speed as people line the roads, dousing riders- and farangs are considered prime targets.
